Exploring Croom Maigue Walk: A Weekly Community Tradition
Croom Community Development Association (CCDA) has officially launched a new local walking route, inviting the people of Croom and beyond to discover the natural beauty, rich heritage, and biodiversity of their town. Croom Maigue Walk, now taking place every Thursday evening, is a 3.2km loop showcasing some of the most scenic and historic features of the area.
A Walk Through History and Nature
Beginning at Croom Town Park, walkers are treated to 11 acres of green parkland along the River Maigue. The walk follows a clockwise route through the park, with cross-paths allowing for shorter or altered loops. The park is home to a wealth of native trees, supporting local biodiversity and creating a tranquil environment perfect for mindful strolling.
From there, the route continues along Noonan’s Lane, where glimpses of the river and Croom Mill—including the beautifully restored Mill Wheel—offer peaceful, photogenic views. The River Maigue Bridge, a structure that has stood since at least 1651 and possibly earlier, is a highlight. This historic spot gives walkers a clear view of the river’s distinctive bend, which may have inspired the name "Croom."
Rivers, Castles, and Cultural Footsteps
Turning left at the Mill, walkers are guided along the river past the impressive Croom Castle. Once part of the vital Limerick–Cork road, this riverside stretch is now a pedestrian-friendly path maintained by Limerick City and County Council. The castle itself stands on a site once held by the O’Donovans before being claimed by the Earls of Kildare, echoing with the history of centuries past.
Further along, the route offers changing perspectives of the Maigue and its weir, framed by majestic horse chestnut trees. Birdlife abounds—herons, kingfishers, egrets, and dippers are regular visitors, offering moments of connection with the natural world.
Return Through Heritage
As the walk loops back, participants cross the bridge once more, where dippers nest beneath the structure. Bridge Street brings a touch of literary and social history—once home to bustling businesses and an 18th-century haunt of the famed Maigue Poets. The final stretch travels down Croom Main Street and returns to the Town Park. Formerly known as the Well Meadow, the park may also have hosted Red Hugh O’Donnell’s army en route to the Battle of Kinsale in 1601.
Accessibility and Community Engagement
With 90% of the walk on a smooth surface, the route is well-suited to wheelchair users, families with buggies, and walkers of all abilities. A perfect addition to a healthy lifestyle, the walk can be complemented by coffee or breakfast at Aubergine Restaurant, located beside the Town Park. The restaurant generously provided refreshments and crisps during the walk’s launch event—sincere thanks to them for supporting community well-being.
